The NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup is the most contrived attempt at season-end drama in racing, with double-points races in Formula 1 a close second. But if sanctioning bodies such as NASCAR have accepted contrived championship formats, why not contrive them more to make them more interesting? Why not let drivers into the Chase after the Chase has begun?

Giving underperforming drivers an earned free boost is nothing new in NASCAR. The Lucky Dog rule allows the foremost driver that is one lap down to pass the pace car on cautions and make up that lap. Racing purists complain, and with good reason, but this rule has hardly ruined the spectacle. NASCAR should apply this idea of promoting the first of the slowest to the Chase.

The proposed format would start by choosing the starting sixteen Chase drivers with the current system; race winners sitting at 30th or above in the standings after 26 races, plus the next highest remaining non-race-winners as necessary. The three races of the Challenger Round would proceed, and the twelve top performing Chase drivers would advance, with winning Chase drivers advancing automatically. A thirteenth driver, the top performing non-Chase driver, would be promoted to the Chase and advance as well. Under this format, Kyle Larson would be the thirteenth driver to advance to the Contender Round.

The cycle would then repeat. The top eight of the remaining thirteen drivers would advance to the Eliminator round, plus the top driver outside of the thirteen over those three races. However, this time allow one of the four previously cut drivers to advance if they can perform. Right now, Jamie McMurray is leading for that promotion spot, but previously-cut Kurt Busch is next in line.

After the three Eliminator Round races, advance the top four of the remaining nine Drivers and again promote the best of the rest. Then allow these five to race for the championship in Homestead.

An argument could be made to extend the promotion of the best non-Chase driver through the Championship Round. This would make the race winner of Homestead the Sprint Cup Champion no matter what happened in the previous Chase races, or indeed the entire NASCAR season. While I like the idea of Juan Pablo Montoya entering Homestead in the #12, winning the race, and winning the championship. The line must be drawn somewhere. I just suggest we push the line a little further.

When going around in a circle becomes more complicated than the subordinate clause.

They let AJ in the Chase and he's terrible at driving in circles.

Here is my idea for what a better chase would look like:

Top 6 in wins qualify and the rest of the 16 car chase is filled in by the top 10 in points.

3 rounds in the chase, 3 races in the first round, 3 races in the second round, and 4 in the last round.

Each round the lowest six in points get eliminated.

The two drivers with the highest points from the entire season that did not make it past the second round of the chase also qualify for the final four races of the championship.

The final four races will have one road course(COTA?), one superspeedway, a short track, and one 1.5 mile track. This would pretty much cover all of the types of tracks that NASCAR races at and will really benefit the better overall driver, not the one that is really good at Homestead, while also making the final races very important for points.

Fact: The only thing that would make me consider watching NASCAR again, is if they go back to production based cars. Which, of course, will never happen.
